Contouring For Beginners - A Simple Guide To Creating Dimension To Your Face

Contouring has been around for years, but it seems to have regained popularity in recent times. This is likely due to the fact that it can help to create dimension and shape to your face. By using contouring makeup products correctly, it is possible to slim down or reshape facial features, and to create an overall more flattering appearance. In this article, we will provide a simple guide on how to contour your face with makeup. At the end of this post I will also outline all of the products I use daily to contour my face.

What is Contouring?

Contouring is the process of using makeup to sculpt and define your face. It can be used to create the appearance of higher cheekbones, a smaller forehead, or a slimmer nose. By using contouring techniques, you can dramatically change the way your face looks.

Determine Your Face Shape

Prepping Your Skin

Prepping your face with moisturizer and a primer is the first step for any makeup application. This creates the perfect canvas for a smooth makeup look.

Main Shade Foundation

This is the foundation that matches your skin color. Apply your foundation all over. It doesn't matter what kind of coverage, whichever you prefer and are comfortable using.

Concealer

If you have mature skin like me, you want to be careful with placing concealer under the eye area. I prefer not to use any at all but if you must, only place a small amount on inner corner and outer corner of eye and blend in. Avoid dragging product under your eyes.

If you are a young buck without fine lines and wrinkles under your eye area then go to town with your concealer! Use the guide above according to your face shape.

Contouring

Apply your contour shade in the places that best suit your face shape above. Start with light thin, narrow layer, you can always build. Using a damp beauty blender or a blending brush, blend upward pressing the contour shade into your face. Try not to swipe in long strokes up and down as this might drag the contour shade to far down or up your face. I personally prefer to use my finger for applying and blending for precise placement.

Complete the rest of your makeup such as blush, mascara, eye shadow etc..... and wala, you now have your contoured face.

In the videos above I used my Seint pallet. Seint makeup is an all in one customizable makeup pallet which is perfect for an everyday look whether you are contouring or not.

Make Up Favorites

If you aren't happy with the way your face looks, you can try contouring other areas of your face for the look you desire. Makeup is fun and there are no rules when it comes to makeup. Play with it until you get the hang of it and achieve the look you love. Practice makes perfect!
